Description

1862 Liberty Double Eagle, AU58
Elusive Type One Date

1862 $20 AU58 NGC. Ex: Duquesne. A low wartime mintage of 92,133 Liberty double eagles was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1862, and few examples were saved by contemporary collectors. In addition, the issue was not well-represented in recent shipwreck finds. As a result, the 1862 is one of the rarest Type One double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint.

The present coin is an attractive near-Mint example, with vivid orange and greenish-gold surfaces that retain much original mint luster and show a number of grade-consistent minor abrasions on both sides. The design elements were strongly impressed and retain almost all of their original detail, with just a trace of wear on the high points. Census: 19 in 58 (1 in 58 ), 8 finer (5/15).
