Description

1862 Twenty Dollar, AU58
Scarce in All Grades

1862 $20 AU58 PCGS. Coming from a mintage of only 92,133 pieces, the 1862 double eagle is seldom offered in any grade and commands a premium all the way down in VF condition. Uncirculated examples exist but are rare and do not have a large AU population as a support to stifle their demand. Even high-end About Uncirculated coins are regarded as a landmark acquisition for collectors pursuing this issue.

The present near-Mint representative is well-detail and thoroughly lustrous with original peach-gold and warm orange hues. The high points of the design feature olive overtones to attest to the originality of the surfaces. Scattered abrasions are seen, as expected, the most noticeable located on the reverse above the Y in TWENTY. Population: 3 in 58, 11 finer (6/17).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269M, PCGS# 8937, Greysheet# 9799)

Weight: 33.44 grams
