Description

1862 Double Eagle, MS61
High-End Eye Appeal

1862 $20 MS61 NGC. While gold coins quickly disappeared from circulation during the Civil War, there was little numismatic interest in regular-issue double eagles. Most 19th century collectors could not afford to set aside date runs of twenty dollar coins, and the wealthy collectors who could preferred proofs. For practical purposes, large denomination gold coins seldom appeared at auction before the 1930s. High interest in low-population gold twenties is a relatively recent phenomenon. Compared to the nearly 3,000,000 double eagles that were struck in 1861, only 92,333 1862 twenties were struck in 1862. This is a gleaming, high quality Mint State double eagle for the MS61 grade level. A few tiny marks define the grade, yet the orange-gold eye appeal sparkling mint luster suggest an even finer grade. NGC Census: 2 in 61, 5 finer (7/25).(Registry values: N4719)
