Description

1862 Double Eagle, MS62
Mint State Rarity
Ex:
S.S. Republic

1862 $20 MS62 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Gold denominations from 1862, excluding the mass-produced gold dollar, had low productions. Just 92,133 double eagles were struck, compared to a nearly 3,000,000 mintage the prior year. None were given numismatic consideration, since the few collectors of the series purchased proofs. The issue is very scarce in any grade, and fully Uncirculated examples are very rare. The present semiprooflike wheat-gold twenty has a crisp strike and a smooth reverse. It was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic, which met its fate in the Atlantic Ocean in October 1865. The obverse exhibits the expected number of wispy abrasions. Census: 2 in 62, 3 finer (11/17).
