Description

Well Detailed 1862-S Double Eagle, AU55

1862-S $20 AU55 NGC. The large-mintage 1862-S double eagle (854,173 pieces) saw extensive circulation. Douglas Winter and Adam Crum (2002) write that until the recent discovery of some hoards the '62-S was rare in any grade higher than XF. It can now be located through the AU levels without too much difficulty. Mint State coins, however, remain extremely rare. Luster resides in the recessed areas of this Choice AU honey-gold specimen, and the design features exhibit better detail than ordinarily seen on surviving examples. Scattered small contact marks are visible, a condition seen on most 1862-S twenties.(Registry values: N1793)
