Description

1862-S Twenty Dollar, MS61
From the
Brother Jonathan Shipwreck

1862-S $20 MS61 NGC. Ex: Brother Jonathan. The Brother Jonathan sank off the coast of California in July 1865. Most of the crew and passengers drowned, and its large shipment of gold sank to the ocean floor. This salvaged 1862-S double eagle is in Uncirculated condition, preserved for more than a century in its saltwater tomb with little surface affects. The coin is sharp and luminous with rich orange-gold color. A small mark above the eagle's head and a thin, vertical scratch in the left reverse field prevent a finer grade, although even in MS61 this coin is decidedly rare. Higher-grade pieces are seldom available. Census: 17 in 61, 9 finer (11/18).
