Description

1862-S Double Eagle, MS61
Nautical Pedigree, Brightly Lustrous

1862-S $20 MS61 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Medium S. Doug Winter reports that at least 11 of the 114 1862-S double eagle pulled from the remains of the S.S. Republic were in Uncirculated condition. Those coins now constitute about one-quarter to one-third of the 30 to 40 Mint State examples of the 1862-S extant. Unlike certain other issues contemporary to this one, whose Uncirculated populations were vastly inflated through shipwreck recoveries, the 1862-S remains conditionally rare. Indeed, the finest known representative is only two and a half grade points higher than the coin offered here.

Brightly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, and the devices exhibit a bold impression. A lovely example of a challenging Western No Motto issue with a terrific nautical pedigree. Census: 18 in 61, 9 finer (11/21).
