Description

1862-S Twenty Dollar, MS61
Attractive Straw-Gold Color

1862-S $20 MS61 NGC. Silver and gold coins did not circulate in 1862 east of the Mississippi River, but points West and the West Coast saw little impact on its circulating coinage during the Civil War. The 1862-S double eagle is readily available in circulated grads and Mint State examples (or nearly so) were recovered from the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic shipwrecks. This MS61 coin is of unreported origin. Frosted straw-gold surfaces are sharply struck and minimally abraded for the grade. A few tiny marks dot the surfaces. Mint luster glows throughout both the obverse and the reverse. Although the 1862-S was not a particularly well-struck double eagle date, this example features strong radial lines on the stars and considerable definition on the hair curls. Census: 20 in 61, 9 finer (9/24).(Registry values: N4719)
