Description

Original 1862-S Double Eagle MS61

1862-S $20 MS61 NGC. An original example with a good strike and some distributed marks on the left obverse. The remainder of this satiny representative exhibits minimal contact. Die cracks wander across most of the reverse lettering. Given its cramped conditions, the San Francisco Mint was productive, and coined far more in face value than the Philadelphia Mint did in 1862. But there were few if any West Coast gold coin collectors until the final decade of the 19th century, and as a result, the 1862-S remains rare in Mint State despite a handful of S.S. Republic examples. Census: 18 in 61, 18 finer (9/07).
