Description

1862-S Twenty Dollar, MS61
Far Finer Than Usually Seen

1862-S $20 MS61 PCGS. CAC. A peppering of smaller abrasions on this Mint State 1862-S double eagle is accompanied by a few larger marks, most notably just above the 2 in the date, but overall the surfaces retain considerable eye appeal. Most of the large mintage in excess of 850,000 coins saw heavy circulation in the antebellum West of San Francisco and its environs, and today Mint State examples are seldom seen. The MS61 PCGS example at hand is about the upper echelon for survivors; that service has seen five in this grade with only nine finer (4/13), the highest-graded a lone example in MS63. The attractive auburn-gold color, generous luster, and CAC endorsement are added enticements.(Registry values: N4719)
