Description

1862-S Liberty Double Eagle, MS61
Seldom Encountered Any Finer

1862-S $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1862-S Liberty double eagle was produced in large numbers, with a reported mintage of 854,173 pieces. Like most Type One twenties, the 1862-S was heavily circulated and many examples were used in foreign trade. Before the advent of modern shipwreck recoveries, the 1862-S was almost never seen in high grade. Luckily, both the S.S. Brother Jonathan (68 coins) and the S.S. Republic (17 coins) yielded some nice examples.

The present coin is an attractive Mint State specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of the usual softness on the hair and some star centers. The vivid orange-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade and vibrant mint luster radiates from both sides. Population: 13 in 61, 9 finer (7/16).(Registry values: N4719)
