Description

1862-S Twenty, MS62
Sharp and Lustrous, From the
S.S. Republic

1862-S $20 MS62 NGC. CAC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The sidewheel steamer S.S. Republic sank in an October hurricane off the coast of Georgia in 1865, carrying $400,000 worth of Seated halves, eagles, and double eagles in excellent condition. Among the recoveries from the doomed vessel were many Liberty Head twenties, mostly S-mint coins dated 1861-S through 1865-S, many in quite nice condition. This 1862-S shows bright yellow-gold surfaces with good luster, a bold strike, and scattered reeding marks that constitute the grade. This piece would make a great addition to a collection of shipwreck gold. Census: 5 in 62 (1 in 62+), 4 finer (3/14).
