Description

1863 Double Eagle, Vibrant AU58

1863 $20 AU58 PCGS. The 1863 double eagle saw a circulation-strike production of 142,790 pieces, few of which were saved at the time of issue. Consequently, circulated examples are very scarce and Mint State coins are rare. PCGS and NGC has graded a little over 300 specimens in all grades, about 40 of which are in Mint State.

The brassy-gold surfaces of this near-Mint State piece yield ample vibrant luster, and the reverse displays moderate field-motif contrast at various angles. The design elements are strongly defined, including bold radial lines in the obverse stars. Scattered, light marks do not detract. Population: 15 in 58, 19 finer (11/13).
