Description

1863 Liberty Double Eagle, MS60
Elusive Issue in Mint State

1863 $20 MS60 PCGS. Only 142,790 pieces were struck of this scarce Civil War issue, and the 1863 is just a bit less rare than the similarly underrated and overlooked 1862 double eagle. Undoubtedly the melting and export of most bullion coins during the Civil War took a heavy toll on the coins that were struck. Unlike the San Francisco double eagles of this year, few were saved and no significant hoards have been found. Sharply struck overall, the satiny surfaces are quite average for the assigned grade with numerous notable abrasions confined mostly to the obverse side. A light accent of green-golden patina accents the highly lustrous surfaces. Population: 4 in 60, 22 finer (5/22).
