Description

1863 Liberty Head Double Eagle, MS61
Well Struck Type One Philadelphia Issue

1863 $20 MS61 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The 1863 Liberty Head double eagle is one of the scarcer Type One's from the Philadelphia mint, difficult to locate in any grade or condition. In Mint State grades, the issue is a rarity. Nearly all of the 142,790 Philadelphia twenty dollar gold coins struck in 1863 were released to circulation.

This is a well struck 1863 Philadelphia double eagle with good detail in hair curls, profile, and obverse stars. The reverse also shows crisp definition in the eagle's head and feathers, shield lines, and arrows. The coin has moderate grade-consistent bag marks from contact with other coins, most noticeable on the upper reverse. Deep yellow-gold coloration is pleasing. Full frosty luster shimmers on both the obverse and reverse sides of this splendid example. Includes wooden presentation box, COA, and Odyssey Marine booklet. NGC Census: 14 in 61, 23 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N7079)
