Description

MS61 1863 Double Eagle
Distinctive Color

1863 $20 MS61 PCGS. After a huge mintage of double eagles in 1861, production of the denomination at Philadelphia plunged and recovered only slowly during the Civil War years. The business strike mintage for the 1863 twenty, for example, is only 142,790 pieces, and Mint State survivors are condition rarities. This is one such coin, pale wheat-gold overall with large patches of orange at the lower reverse and a sizable copper spot at star 12 on the obverse with a few similarly toned spots elsewhere. Strongly struck at the peripheries with more-than-acceptable interior detail, this is a significantly abraded but still appealing coin for the Liberty double eagle enthusiast. Population: 6 in 61, 10 finer (3/12).(Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269P, PCGS# 8939, Greysheet# 9800)

Weight: 33.44 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
