Description

1863 Liberty Double Eagle, MS61
Partially Prooflike, Wartime Rarity

1863 $20 MS61 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint reduced the number of gold coins struck across all denominations in 1863, facing reality of the days during the darkest hours of the Civil War. The 1863 double eagle is accordingly scarce in all grades and a challenging date in any Mint State. A mere 35 examples were recovered from the S.S. Republic and no 1863 twenties were found among the coins recovered from the S.S. Brother Jonathan. Much prooflike reflectivity survives on this MS61 example. Tiny marks and abrasions dot the surfaces as might be expected for the assigned grade, yet there are no heavy contacts and flashy eye appeal accompanies the well-struck motifs. Type One double eagle collectors have few 1863 examples to choose from when acquiring this low-surviving wartime issue. PCGS Population: 11 in 61, 13 finer (11/25).(Registry values: N7079)
