Description

1863 Twenty Dollar, MS62
Near the Condition Census

1863 $20 MS62 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Republic; The Gilded Age Collection. The sinking of the S.S. Republic on October 25, 1865 off the coast of Georgia had a profound impact on the availability of this Civil War era Philadelphia Mint issue. Prior to the discovery and distribution these treasure coins, the 1863 twenty dollar was available primarily in Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition, with a few About Uncirculated representatives known.

During the S.S. Republic salvage operations, 35 1863 double eagles were recovered -- many of which were later certified as Mint State. Even this small number of coins served to finally expose just how rare this issue was in Mint State (and still is). An immediate increase in auction appearances for high-grade 1863 double eagles was met with aggressive bidding. After many decades of being unavailable and underappreciated, this Civil War-era Philadelphia date suddenly had the spotlight as a major condition rarity. Today, most Mint State 1863 double eagles known are from the S.S. Republic, although many of these coins have been reholdered and lost their pedigrees. This sun-gold example is razor sharp and displays a scattering of light abrasions that dictate the assigned grade. The frosted central elements stand out boldly against the highly lustrous fields for excellent eye appeal.(Registry values: N7079)
