Description

Type One 1863-S Double Eagle, AU58

1863-S $20 AU58 NGC. Small S. The discovery of the S.S. Republic and the S.S. Brother Jonathan resulted in approximately 300 1863-S double eagles entering the market, mostly in the About Uncirculated range. The issue is still very scarce in Mint State, however. It is unknown whether the present AU58 specimen came from one of the above shipwrecks. Nevertheless, its wheat-gold surfaces with subtle greenish tints display a good amount of luster and are less abraded than typically seen for the date. The strike is slightly above average as a fair amount of detail shows in Liberty's hair and most of the star centers.(Registry values: N1793)
