Description

Glorious 1863-S Twenty Dollar, AU58

1863-S $20 AU58 PCGS. Like so many early S-mint double eagles, the story for the 1863-S was the old saw "common in low grades, rare in Mint State." But there was a new theme after the recoveries of the S.S. Republic and S.S. Brother Jonathan steamship wrecks. Both vessels contained numerous examples, adding 300 chiefly AU coins with a few Uncirculated examples to the numismatic market. This piece is only a baby's breath away from Mint State, with glorious orange-gold patina and few individually relevant marks. The bold strike is a delight. Population: 50 in 58, 57 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N1793)
