Description

1864 Twenty Dollar Liberty, MS62
Rarely Offered So Fine

1864 $20 MS62 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint struck only slightly more than 204,000 double eagles in 1864, barely more than one fourth the mintage accomplished at San Francisco. Most of the Philadelphia mintage went into circulation, and any Mint State survivor is a rarity. PCGS and NGC combined report only 19 submissions in MS62 and finer grades, and these numbers may include some duplication. Since our Auction Archives began in 1993, we have handled an 1864 double eagle in MS62 on only seven prior occasions.

The current coin displays bright peach-gold mint luster with a radiant cartwheel effect. A few marks and hairlines on Liberty's cheek determine the grade, and a small nick on her jaw serves as a pedigree marker. Eye appeal is excellent. PCGS Population: 12 in 62 (1 in 62+), 4 finer (11/25).(Registry values: N7079)
