Bright 1864-S Choice AU Twenty

1864-S $20 AU55 NGC. Before large numbers of 1864-S double eagles were discovered aboard the wrecks of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and the S.S. Republic, they were found mostly in VF and XF condition. The discoveries greatly increased the AU and lower Mint State populations. Bright brass-gold surfaces laced with light tan characterize the present Choice AU offering. The design elements are generally well defined, including most of the star centers. Typically abraded, including some noticeable marks in the lower left obverse field.(Registry values: N1793)
