Description
1864-S Double Eagle, MS60
Scarce Date in Mint State
1864-S $20 MS60 NGC. Before recent shipwreck finds yielded
large numbers of 1864-S double eagles in AU and lower Mint State
grades, the issue was found mostly in VF and XF condition. The new
discoveries, possibly including the present coin, greatly increased
the high grade populations. Bright brass-gold surfaces laced with
light tan characterize the present offering. The design elements
are generally well defined, and the fields are lustrous. Typically
abraded, including some noticeable marks in the upper left obverse
field. Census: 18 in 60, 47 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269T, PCGS# 8942, GSID# 9904)
