Description

1864-S Double Eagle, MS61
Ex:
S.S. Republic

1864-S $20 MS61 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. In their gold Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth note that the 1864-S double eagle was mostly seen in VF and XF grades before the salvage of the SS Brother Jonathan and SS Republic shipwrecks. The Brother Jonathan held 108 examples of the date, the Republic 168. This is a Mint State example from the latter source, showing bright, shimmering mint luster and well-struck design elements. Light contact marks are hardly bothersome. Despite the shipwreck discoveries, this No Motto San Francisco issue remains scarce in Uncirculated condition, and it is rarely found finer than the present piece. Census: 28 in 61, 17 finer (11/18).
