Description

Bright Mint State 1864-S Double Eagle

1864-S $20 MS61 NGC. The 1864-S and 1865-S double eagles were formerly quite rare until the recoveries of the S.S. Republic and S.S. Brother Jonathan. As with the 1857-S double eagles recovered in large quantity from the S.S. Central America, the 1864-S and '65-S double eagles were wonderfully well-preserved. This piece offers bright yellow-gold surfaces with complete luster throughout. The strike is sharp, save for weakness on stars 1-3 and the glory of rays on the reverse. There are no obvious contact marks, just a few shallow luster grazes. While this coin is not marked on the encapsulation, we suspect it is likely from one of the recoveries above. Census: 31 in 61, 16 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N4719)
