    Description

    Uncirculated 1864-S Type One Twenty
    Bright Orange-Gold Surfaces

1864-S $20 MS61 NGC. The 1864-S double eagle did hard duty in the Old West, where gold coinage circulated even during and after the Civil War, which was far removed from local concerns at the time. Before the shipwreck recoveries of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic, only circulated examples could be obtained, but now examples have been certified as high as MS65. This MS61 example shows a weak strike on the figure of Liberty, but other details are boldly impressed. The luster is somewhat subdued over lightly marked orange-gold surfaces. As an S-mint Civil War-era double eagle, this coin should prove attractive to more than one collector segment. Census: 29 in 61, 16 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269T, PCGS# 8942)
