    Description

Rare Mint State 1865 Twenty Dollars, MS62 NGC

1865 $20 MS62 NGC. The 1 in the date is triple punched, and has traces of earlier punches both above and below the prominent 1. The 8 is also recut along the peak and left border of its upper loop. A small bagmark at 3 o'clock seems to prevent a Select assessment, since the reverse is well preserved and the obverse is also attractive. The 1865 Twenty is scarce in all grades, but most survivors are found in XF and AU condition. While many 1865-S Double Eagles were recovered from the S.S. Brother Jonathan, no Philadelphia Mint pieces were known to be on that famous shipwreck. As of 11/03, NGC has only certified eleven pieces in Mint State, three of which grade MS62 with none finer.(#8943) (Registry values: P7, N10000) (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943)
