Description

    S.S. Republic 1865 Double Eagle, MS63 « NGC

1865 $20 MS63 ★ NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The S.S. Republic sank on October 18, 1865, and was the most recent major shipwreck recovery of U.S. gold coins. Previous hoards emerged from the S.S. Yankee Blade (1854), S.S. Brother Jonathan (1865) and the S.S. Central America (1857). The 1865 twenty was the primary haul from the S.S. Republic, but the extraordinary demand for attractive Type One double eagles has quickly removed most examples from the marketplace. The present piece has an immaculate reverse, the quality of which must be seen to be believed. The obverse does have a few minor marks, mostly on the portrait and the lower left field. A well struck piece with booming luster. This lot is accompanied by a presentation box, booklet, DVD, and certificate of authenticity from Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943)

    Weight: 33.44 grams
