Description

1865 Twenty Dollar Liberty, MS63
Sharp and Lustrous

1865 $20 MS63 NGC. The 1865 Philadelphia double eagle is scarce in high Mint State grades, much more so than its San Francisco counterpart that was represented in quantity in both the S.S. Republic and S.S. Brother Jonathan shipwrecks. The Philadelphia issue was only found on the S.S. Republic. NGC attributes 289 examples of this Philadelphia issue to the Republic, accounting for the much higher number of Mint State 1865 twenties at NGC vs the paltry numbers at PCGS.

This Select 1865 coin displays bright yellow-gold luster and sharply struck design elements, with mostly clean surfaces. Some light grazes in the left obverse field and a few marks on Liberty's cheek are all that deny a finer grade. Overall eye appeal is pleasing.(Registry values: N7079)
