Description

Amazing MS64 1865 Double Eagle

1865 $20 MS64 ANACS. This is a "wonder coin" No Motto double eagle in so fine a grade. W. David Bowers says of the 1865 issue in his double eagle Guide Book, "Mint State coins are prime rarities and tend to be at or near the MS-60 level." This coin may have been among those lost and recovered aboard the steamship S.S. Republic, which sank in a hurricane on October 25, 1865, off the coast of Georgia. It has the appearance of those coins with its intense mint frost and rich orange-gold color. The devices are fully struck throughout, and there are no obvious or mentionable abrasions. A great Type One twenty for a gold type set.(Registry values: N1)
