Description

1865 Liberty Twenty, MS64
From the
S.S. Republic Treasure

1865 $20 MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. More than 20 years ago Q. David Bowers wrote, "Treasures are always interesting to contemplate and are an essential part of double eagle lure and lore." Although recently refurbished, the sidewheel steamer, S.S. Republic, was lost off the coast of Georgia during a hurricane on October 25, 1865. The cargo included $400,000 in coins hundreds of other artifacts. The gold coins were mostly U.S. eagles and double eagles. The wreckage was located off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. Most of the 1865-dated double eagles recovered from the wreckage grade Mint State, since they had little or no chance to circulate. This Choice Mint State example displays nearly pristine frosty orange-gold surfaces and outstanding eye appeal for the grade. Fulsome satiny luster and a needle-sharp strike embellish the bold eye appeal. This is an attractive near-Gem example still housed in its original NGC S.S. Republic holder. NGC Census: 95 in 64 (5 in 64+, 2 in 64 ), 24 finer (5/25).(Registry values: N1)
