Description

Splendid 1865 Double Eagle, MS64

1865 $20 MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. From a moderate mintage of 351,175 pieces, the 1865 Type One double eagle was very rare in Mint State before the discovery of the S.S. Republic. The supply of Mint State coins was significantly augmented by the recovery of 320 specimens from that shipwreck in grades ranging from AU to MS65. The coin offered here is an especially attractive example from that group, with a visual appeal usually seen on coins in an even higher state of preservation. The striking details are sharp throughout with crisp detail on all design elements, particularly Liberty's hair. The surfaces are delightfully smooth, and display vibrant luster. Only a few insignificant handling marks on Liberty's cheek prevent a higher grade. Census: 80 in 64, 25 finer (6/09).
