Description
Near-Gem 1865 Double Eagle
From the S.S. Republic
1865 $20 MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The 1865 double
eagle has always had added historic appeal to the many history
buffs who double as numismatists, due to its dating from the last
year of the Civil War. Previously to the S.S. Republic
shipwreck recovery, only circulated specimens were obtainable. But
that vessel proved a treasure trove of the date, with 320 pieces
ranging from AU upward. In MS64, this piece is one of 82 so
certified at NGC, with 25 finer (10/09). The yellow-gold surfaces
of this near-Gem example are delightfully smooth and free of
distractions. Only some minor contact on the cheek apparently
precludes an even finer grade. The reverse is equally appealing
with only insignificant abrasions, and the strike is full. An
extremely appealing example.(Registry values: N1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943, GSID# 9802)
