    Description

    Near-Gem 1865 Twenty
    Radiant Cartwheel Luster

1865 $20 MS64 NGC. The Type One double eagles saw their ending issues in 1865, as the end of the Civil War would usher in the Type Two design in 1866, featuring IN GOD WE TRUST within the reverse glory of rays. The mintage of the 1865 Philadelphia Type One twenty was not overlarge at 351,175 coins. But more nice Mint State examples survive today than might be expected due to the tragedy of the S.S. Republic, which sank in the same year with many examples on board. This piece is not specifically provenanced to that shipwreck, but it has a similar appearance. Nice yellow-gold margins cede to slightly deeper color in the interiors. Radiant cartwheel luster prevails on each side. A few marks on Liberty's cheek determine the grade.(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 269U, PCGS# 8943)
