1865 Twenty Dollar, MS64
From the S.S. Republic Treasure
1865 $20 MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The steam ship
was lost off the coast of Georgia during an October 1865 hurricane,
while enroute from New York to New Orleans. More than 50,000 coins
were recovered from the treasure site located about 100 miles
southeast of Savannah, Georgia. This Choice Mint State 1865 double
eagle, coined the same year the ship was lost, is one of the items
recovered. A sharply struck piece, both sides have lovely satin
luster with slight contrast between the field and the devices. The
surfaces are pristine. Census: 89 in 64 (2 in 64+, 2 in 64★
