Description
Blundered Date 1865 Double Eagle, MS64
Tied for Finest PCGS Certified
1865 $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. A Choice Mint State example of the
rare 1865 double eagle, an issue seldom seen in higher Mint State
grades. In fact, this piece is tied with four other submissions for
the finest that PCGS has ever certified (2/10). Higher NGC Census
totals are due to certification of the S.S. Republic
treasure. This wonderful example is highly lustrous with frosty
gold surfaces and sharp design features. The surfaces are smooth
and essentially mark free. The obverse die is blundered, with digits visible in the dentils at 6 o'clock. This may be the same as the Misplaced Date Variety 2 recorded in Bowers' Guide Book of Double Eagles, a variety discovered by David Camire in January 2004. That variety is described as having the bottoms of an inverted 18 in the dentils below the 65. However, we also see a remnants of a third digit below the 8, and possible a fourth below the 1. It appears that this blundered die may have the tops of a complete misplaced date in the dentils.(Registry values: N1)
