    Description

    Select 1865-S Twenty
    Likely Shipwreck Recovery

1865-S $20 MS63 NGC. The 1865-S double eagle was, by a slim margin, the highest-mintage of the six Civil War-era S-mint issues, struck in an amount slightly more than 1 million coins. But like many issues struck in the far West, the issue largely and widely circulated, and it would take two shipwreck recoveries to make available nice Mint State coins. Garrett and Guth point out that the Harry W. Bass, Jr. coin was an XF. This Select example shows few marks for the grade, but the mint luster is a bit subdued, likely accounting for the MS63 level. This piece is not specifically provenanced to a shipwreck, but it certainly bears all the hallmarks of one.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 269V, PCGS# 8944)
