Description

1865-S Liberty Head Twenty, MS63
Ex:
Brother Jonathan

1865-S $20 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Brother Jonathan. 785. More than 600 Mint State 1865-S double eagles were recovered from the shipwreck of the S.S. Brother Jonathan, transforming the issue from a challenging date to an available type coin. The issue was considered elusive before the treasure recovery, as seen from an early auction appearance in the Wendell C. Foster Collection (Thomas Elder, 6/1935), lot 2339, "1865 Twenty Dollars. S. Mint. Fine. V. Rare." Of course, the situation is much different today, when the issue is primarily prized as a mintmarked type coin.
The present coin is sharply struck, with just a touch of softness on the left obverse stars. The devices show thick mint frost, and the fields are minimally abraded. The obverse surfaces are an attractive reddish-gold, while the reverse is bright yellow-gold, with reddish margins.(Registry values: N2998)
