Description

S.S. Brother Jonathan 1865-S Twenty, MS64

1865-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Brother Jonathan. The S.S. Brother Jonathan sailed north from San Francisco, bound for Portland, Oregon. After putting in at Crescent City, California, the ship resumed her voyage just after noon on Sunday, July 30, 1865. Sailing into a gale from the northwest, progress came to a standstill, and the ship turned around to return to Crescent City, but never made it as she crashed on a hidden rock, ripping the ship apart.
After a series of explorations, Deep Sea Research, Inc., located the treasure in the 1990s. Bowers and Merena handled an auction of 1,207 coins from the treasure in May 1999. Today, these treasure coins appear infrequently. This double eagle, minted just weeks before, is a wonderful orange-gold example with brilliant surfaces and extraordinary eye appeal. PCGS has only certified 23 finer pieces (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
