Important Choice 1865-S Twenty
Ex:
S.S. Brother Jonathan

1865-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Brother Jonathan. One of the more interesting features of Garrett and Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins is its notation of the finest example of a given issue found in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. In the case of the 1865-S, it is highly illustrative in showing how the discovery of the shipwrecks S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic affected its availability in high grades: while coins in several Mint State grades are available to collectors today, the best example the Smithsonian owns is an AU50, likely donated decades ago and one of the finest pieces known at that time.
This well struck coin, at MS64 a grade that was unheard-of even a decade ago, offers smooth, creamy luster and peach-tinted straw-gold surfaces. The devices are minimally marked, and the overall eye appeal is excellent. PCGS has graded just 23 finer pieces (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
