1865-S $20 MS65 NGC....
Description
1865-S Double Eagle, MS65
High-End Condition Rarity
1865-S $20 MS65 NGC. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. This
beautiful Type One Gem possesses blazing cartwheel luster, and has
only trivial obverse contact. The reverse is even better preserved,
and on its own would likely secure an even finer grade. Well struck
on the major devices, a few obverse stars and peripheral letters
are not razor-sharp, but the details are crisp overall. The reverse
die is late state and has several heavy cracks along the border,
with small breaks noted near the U in UNITED and the M in AMERICA.
The Brother Jonathan and Republic shipwrecks have
made this issue obtainable to collectors in high grades, but once
such pieces are dispersed, they may not reappear at auction for
many years. This piece is not pedigreed to a shipwreck on the
holder, although it may have come from one earlier.Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2005), lot 2461.(Registry values: N4719)
