Description

Highly Attractive 1865-S Gem Double Eagle
Ex:
Brother Jonathan

1865-S $20 MS65 NGC. Ex: Brother Jonathan. The 1865-S double eagle was very rare in high grade before the finds of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic. As indicated by David Bowers in his 1998 The Treasure Ship S. S. Brother Jonathan, nearly 500 Mint State pieces of this date were recovered from the Brother Jonathan, making this date among the more common Type One issues.
The present Gem is one of the 14 twenties recovered in this grade. Its brass-gold surfaces display subtle apricot streaks and hints of light tan and possess attractive satiny luster. A precise strike imparts strong definition to the design elements, and the smooth surfaces show none of the etching sometimes apparent with seawater discoveries. The few small marks scattered about are characteristic of Type One San Francisco double eagles. Census: 58 in 65, 8 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N4719)
