Lustrous Near-Mint 1866 Double Eagle
1866 $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. A widely collected issue as the first P-mint Type Two double eagle, those with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Despite a circulation strike production approaching 700,000 coins, this issue is scarce in Mint State. This near-Mint State piece is one of 46 so certified at PCGS, with 18 finer (9/09). Only a bit of high-point rub separates this alluring coin from a much higher grade, with pleasing orange-yellow surfaces and some smoke-gray on the highest areas.(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269X, PCGS# 8949, GSID# 9803)
