Description
1866 Liberty Twenty, MS61
First Year With Motto
1866 $20 Motto MS61 PCGS. The Type Two design was introduced
in 1866, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse, and the
Philadelphia Mint produced a substantial mintage of 698,745 Liberty
double eagles with the new design. Unfortunately, there was little
interest in collecting large denomination gold coins at the time
and few high-quality examples were saved for numismatic purposes.
Today, the 1866 can be located in mid-circulated grades with little
difficulty, but Mint State specimens are rare. The present coin is an attractive MS61 example, with well-detailed design elements and lustrous orange-gold surfaces that show the number of scattered, minor contact marks expected for the grade. The overall presentation is quite appealing. Population: 32 in 61, 8 finer (11/15).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269X, PCGS# 8949, Greysheet# 9803)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
