1866 Motto Double Eagle, MS61
Incredible Orange-Gold and Rose Color
Prooflike Cameo Contrast

1866 $20 Motto MS61 PCGS. The 1866 double eagle from Philadelphia was only produced with Motto reverse dies. Nearly 700,000 pieces were struck, but this issue is remarkably scarce in Mint State and rarely offered finer than MS61. Although we have handled an MS62 coin on five occasions, this MS61 example has claims to being the most eye-appealing Mint State 1866 double eagle that we have ever handled. Deeply prooflike fields glimmer with only the slightest rotation beneath a light, and with no obvious die lapping present, it is likely that the prooflike surface is from the initial die preparation. This piece is fully struck and shows appreciable cameo contrast on both sides. Moreover, the central devices have luminous rose-gold luster that further separates them visually from the tangerine-orange of the fields and borders. Scattered light abrasions that determine the grade are a visual afterthought on this incredible first-year With Motto type coin. Population: 38 in 61, 9 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)
