Description

1866 Double Eagle, MS61
Beginning of With Motto Series

1866 $20 MS61 NGC. CAC. All 1866 Philadelphia double eagles are of the Type Two or With Motto design, which tucks IN GOD WE TRUST within the glory of stars above the eagle's head. At MS61, this is a conditionally rare example of a date that is near-unobtainable any better. Luminous yellow-gold surfaces are lightly patinated with faint orange overtones. The strike is decent, if a touch soft on the hair below the coronet. The usual scattering of light abrasions is present, as are deeper marks at Liberty's throat, within the reverse glory, and underlining the word OF on the reverse, yet the all-around eye appeal is solid for an MS61 coin. NGC has graded only one example as MS62 or better (6/13).(Registry values: N4719)
