Description

1866 Twenty Dollar, Appealing MS61
Frosty Original Luster, Condition Rarity

1866 $20 MS61 PCGS. The first Type Two issue from this mint, the 1866 double eagle had a fairly substantial mintage of nearly 700,000 pieces, but it is somewhat scarcer overall than one might be led to believe. Domestic circulation at the time of production was not the primary cause of attrition, as many pieces were exported for trade; those that survived melting and have returned to the numismatic marketplace typically show light wear and are heavily abraded. Mint State pieces are rare, with virtually all restricted to the MS60 and MS61 levels; finer pieces are prohibitively rare.

This representative is among the few genuinely appealing examples known, showing frosty rose and honey-gold luster, and sharp design elements. Light chatter in the fields accounts for the grade, as no singularly obtrusive abrasions are present. An excellent acquisition for the collector of conditionally rare gold. Population: 29 in 61, 6 finer (10/14).(Registry values: N4719)
