Description

    1866 Twenty Dollar, MS61
    Minimally Abraded for Grade

1866 $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1866 double eagle is mostly available in the Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades. About Uncirculated coins become a bit more difficult, and Uncirculated pieces are rare. MS61 is the highest grade most collectors will encounter; PCGS and NGC have certified fewer than 40 coins at this level of preservation (a number of which are undoubtedly resubmitted or crossover pieces), and a mere three specimens finer. The lack of high-grade Mint State coins can be attributed to the issue being tossed about in bags in overseas trade, resulting in numerous bagmarks..

The orange-gold surfaces of this MS61 example display traces of faded red, along with a scattering of marks typical of the majority of surviving specimens. Fortunately, these are somewhat fewer and of less severity than often seen with this grade designation. The design features are relatively well impressed, including the centrils of the obverse stars. Population: 16 in 61, 2 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269X, PCGS# 8949)

    Weight: 33.44 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
