Description
1866 Double Eagle, MS62
First Year of the With Motto Twenties
1866 $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. This large mintage of nearly
700,000 pieces is quite popular as the first Philadelphia Mint
issue of the With Motto type, the new design introduced shortly
after the end of the Civil War and including the motto IN GOD WE
TRUST, which had already appeared on the two cent piece. This
example offers softly frosted mint luster over surfaces that show
attractive apricot-gold color and a good strike overall. A few
minor scrapes in the lower obverse field near stars 1-3 are
consistent with the grade. With the CAC approval, this piece is
among the few finest known. Population: 5 in 62, 1 finer
(1/14).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269X, PCGS# 8949, Greysheet# 9803)
Weight: 33.44 grams
