Description

1866 Motto Twenty, MS62
Condition Rarity, Just One Graded Finer

1866 $20 MS62 PCGS. FS-801. Listed in Cherrypicker's as a doubled die reverse, clearly visible on the Motto at the N, G, and R, the result of a small-letter hub over a large-letter hub. This variety is also listed in the professional edition of the 2014 Guide Book on page 323 (at a premium in value), but our experience tells us this Doubled Die is the "rule" rather than an exception for the 1866 twenty.

Much more significant is the rarity of all Mint State, Type Two double eagles in general, and this 1866 twenty in particular. It is one of just two examples of the date to be graded MS62 by PCGS and NGC combined, with one finer(11/13). An attractive, reddish-gold representative of the first-year With Motto design, it displays relatively few abrasions for the grade and unbroken, cartwheel mint luster on both sides. A rare opportunity to acquire a significant, Type Two double eagle, highly ranked for both date and type.(Registry values: N4719)
